Next month, a team of scientists will launch an expedition to the sunken Titanic. The goal will be to assess the condition of the vessel and to create a three-dimensional map in order for the public to better understand the layout of the ship. This 3d map will virtually recreate the Titanic and give new life to the almost 100 year old ship.

The expedition will be the most scientifically advanced excursion to the Titanic shipwreck since it was discovered 25 years ago. Expected to last 20 days, the expedition will leave St. John’s, Newfoundland on August 18. The expedition has signed a partnership with RMS Titanic Inc., the company that has exclusive salvage rights to Titanic artifacts. Although the goal of the expedition is not to collect items, they will be probing a six mine square area where artifacts from the Titanic are still scattered.

Looking to capture the Titanic story and preserve the integrity of the shipwreck, the expedition hopes to create a rendering of the Titanic that will act as the most accurate map of the vessel in history. After the Titanic sank in 1912, the wreck was discovered by Dr. Robert Ballard in 1985. Most of the expeditions since then have been to photograph the wreck or recover Titanic artifacts. James Cameron also led teams to the sunken Titanic for shots to be used in the Titanic movie. The last expedition to the Titanic was in 2004 where Titanic artifacts were discovered and are now displayed by a subsidiary of Premier Exhibitions of Atlanta.

Organizer of the expedition David Gallo hopes to find out exactly what the state of the Titanic wreck is in using the latest in marine equipment. The expedition will involve a 250 foot research vessel, a crew of 20, and three submersibles using the latest sonar, acoustic, and filming technology. Because technology has advanced since the last dive to the Titanic, organizers believe that this will be one of the most successful and useful dives to the Titanic ever. Gallo also believes that this will be just one of many future trips to the Titanic wreck for the purposes of mapping the vessel and capturing its glory before the ship collapses to the ocean floor.

In so many words, the Titanic was absolutely massive. The largest luxury cruise vessel of its time, the ship was designed to be the biggest and highest quality ship available. The Titanic had everything from an indoor pool, to a diner, to three different classes for passengers. Begun in 1909 and complete in 1911, the ship was completed in just over two years. Using the latest technology, the Harland Wolff shipyard of Belfast Ireland created what they thought to be an unsinkable vessel.

Measuring 882 feet, 9 inches long and 92 feet wide, the Titanic was built by over 15,000 workers and a great deal of funding was provided by American industrialist J.P. Morgan. From keel completion, the Titanic was the largest passenger vessel of its time and was built extremely quickly. Designed to be the big sister to the Britannic, the Titanic had a similar design to her little sister, but was a step up in size and luxury. Titanic construction lasted just over two years.

After setting sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England on April 10, 1912, the Titanic made a few stops in France and Ireland before continuing on its course toward New York City. Despite receiving iceberg warnings in the North Atlantic, the ship’s captain Joseph Smith ordered full steam ahead. At approximately 11:40 pm, the Titanic struck an iceberg which buckled the hull and popped out thousands of rivets that were holding the ship together.

It took about two hours for the Titanic to sink completely and 1,517 out of 2,223 passengers aboard the ship perished. Many theories have been presented over the years and the recovery of many different Titanic artifacts tell the story as to why the ship may have sunk. Some scientists believe that although she was at the height of luxury and size, that the construction was shoddy at times. Large amounts of slag were found in the rivets that held the ship together. Scientists believe that the low quality slag metal made the rivets brittle in the cold water and ultimately led to the sinking of the Titanic.

Although her horrific story is what the Titanic is known for, she is also seen as an engineering accomplishment for her size and speed. The Titanic was the fastest cruise liner of her time and the most luxurious. Despite facts that have surfaced nearly 100 years after the Titanic tragedy, it cannot be denied that she was the largest and most luxurious cruise vessel of the 1900′s and a feat of engineering.

Engineered to be the largest and most luxurious steam ship in the world, the Titanic was truly a marvel of modern engineering. Deemed as virtually unsinkable, the massive Titanic was owned and operated by the White Star Liner and was registered at the Liverpool port.

The Titanic was designed with the latest in technology and what they thought was the utmost of craftsmanship. Using the latest in technology and with a vision of grandiose things in store for it, the Titanic plans were introduced in 1909 and the ship was put into action on May 31st, 1911. Construction was headed by Harland Wolff shipyard in Belfast, Ireland and the Titanic was designed to be a bigger and better version of her little sister called the Britannic.

Titanic construction was funded by American industrialist J.P. Morgan and ended up being 882 feet, 9 inches long and 92 feet wide. The titanic had the capacity to carry 3,547 making it the largest passenger vessel of its time. The ship came complete with every luxury one would want from a cruise liner.

In only two years and two months, from keel to completion, the Titanic was ready for its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. More than 15,000 men were employed during the Titanic’s construction and historians believe that shoddy craftsmanship in some areas may have been the reason that the Titanic sank into the Atlantic during its maiden voyage.

Although expected to use the latest in technological advancements, many historians have found that large quantities of slag were found in the rivets that held the Titanic together. Reports from Harland Wolff allegedly speak of a lack of skilled riveters available and it is thought that they simply settled for sub-par work. When the Titanic hit an iceberg on the night of April 14, 1912, it is believed that the hull buckled and the rivets holding the ship together popped right out. The sinking of the Titanic is an event that shook the entire world and still sparks interest today.

With the Titanic 100th anniversary quickly approaching, many individuals are asking questions about the Titanic and her short life. From keel to completion, the Titanic was speedily built and appeared to be unsinkable. The modern marvel of engineering and luxury may have seemed like a flawless vessel, but many question its integrity and the integrity of those who oversaw the construction.

Whether or not the building of the Titanic was the best it could be is not of any importance, what is important is the remembering the legendary vessel, those lost during its sinking, and the idea of the largest unsinkable passenger ship every to have been built.

The Titanic was discovered by a concerted effort from French and American scientists. Dr. Robert Ballard led the American side of the operation with a submersible from Hole Deep Submergence Lab in Massachusetts, and Francias de Recherche from pour I’Exploitation des Mers Led by Jean Jerry ran the French side of things. They were armed with some of the most sophisticated underwater technology available at the time and each side had high expectations for the operation. Although the subject of public scrutiny, the effort set out to find the Titanic wreck, something that the public thought was simply ludicrous to attempt.

Ballard, the U.S. leader had been interested in finding the Titanic shipwreck since 1973, and had actually set out to locate the vessel in 1977. Ballard used a somewhat less advanced way to attempt to locate the Titanic which involved using a drilling ship to probe the bottom of the ocean. The event ended when the rigging pipe snapped off and Ballard had to once again wait to attempt the legendary vessel. Armed with better technology and the help of the French Institute Francias de Recherche pour I’Exploitation des Mers (I.F.R.E.M.E.R.), Ballard would finally be successful in locating the Titanic.

The French vessel Le Suroit towed her state of the art side scan sonar system which was the most advanced model of sonar at the time. The instrument was capable of making 3,000 sweeps of the ocean floor in each pass. Scientists would study and analyze the print outs of the images of the ocean floor, but still couldn’t find the sunken Titanic.

Le Suroit eventually was needed elsewhere and the scientists transferred to the American vessel Knorr. The ship left off right where the other vessel had with back and forth sweeps of the ocean floor. Finally, on September 1st of 1985, the seabed began to paint a picture of a different layout. Instead of the usual ripples of mud and sand, unusual marks began to show including a massive ship’s boiler.

After discovering the Titanic wreck, Ballard and his crew returned six months later with a submersible called Alvin and a remote controlled underwater robot by the name of Jason Junior, or JJ. Alvin was deployed with Ballard, chief pilot Ralph Hollis, and co-pilot Dudley Foster, but the trip was cut short after a low battery and a malfunction. After a few days at it, the crew was finally able to access the Titanic completely and contribute to the wealth of knowledge about the vessel that we possess today.

Of the 2,223 passengers on the legendary Titanic, only 706 survived. Titanic survivors are a very interesting concept because of the large population of men who were lost during the sinking of the Titanic.

Most everyone has heard of the idea of ‘women and children first’, and this was strictly enforced during the Titanic tragedy. Another old adage of ‘going down with the ship’, was also something that was easily recognizable during the sinking of the Titanic. Class also played a part in who would survive and who would be lost in the tragedy as well. Many different factors all contributed to the number of Titanic survivors as well as the strange and tragic tale of the largest peacetime maritime disaster in history.

The largest percentage of survivors was women and children in first and second class. Many accommodations and being closer to the deck allowed these individuals to make a quick escape to the lifeboats which were in short supply. A locked gate separating second and third class made it more difficult for those in third class to reach the deck while there was still sufficient lifeboat space. Men in third class experienced the largest fatality rate. Only about 20% of men on the ship itself survived, and of the 1,517 fatalities on the ship, 1,347 were men. Most of the crew was also lost during the sinking of the Titanic. Out of the 899 crew members on board, 685 went down with the ship.

Titanic survivors were mostly men and women. About 74% of the women survived as did about 52% of the children. All the children from first and second class survived, while most of the loss of child life came from third class. The Titanic had the capacity to hold 32 lifeboats, but this was not mandatory under maritime law of the time. As far as the Titanic was concerned, the 20 lifeboats aboard the Titanic were actually exceeding regulation.

The Titanic was a marvel of its time and used what was thought to be of the utmost quality and craftsmanship; she was thought to be virtually unsinkable. There was also a problem with deploying lifeboats that weren’t at full capacity. Many lifeboats were lost during the sinking of the Titanic, but there were also many that were deployed while only half full or less.

Many who survived the Titanic disaster had come forward after the event and described the horror that it entailed. The last surviving member of the Titanic died in March of 2009, and thus there are no survivors that had experienced the legendary vessel.

Much investigation has been put into the stories of the survivors as well as evidence collected from the Titanic wreck to ensure that an event like this doesn’t happen again. The 100th anniversary of the Titanic sinking is quickly approaching as the world will remember those lost in the Titanic wreck and the survivors who were brave enough to tell their story.

The Titanic was carrying 2,223 passengers on board when it sank, and out of those 1,517 died. The guests were split into first, second, and third class, and the higher classes had an advantage when it came to boarding lifeboats and being closer to the top of the deck where the lifeboats were being deployed. There was also a locked gate that separated second and third class sections which inhibited the escape of many third class individuals.

As a result of all of these factors, there were as many deaths in the third class as the first and second classes put together. Most of the Titanic survivors were women, children, or members of the higher class within the Titanic.

As far as actual numbers go, 130 first class passengers died, 166 second class passengers died, and 536 third class passengers died. Most of the third class women and children died and most of the first and second class women and children lived. The highest casualty rate aboard the titanic was men. There was a strict women and children first rule when it came to boarding the lifeboats.

In the end, the Titanic sinking took the lives of 1,347 men and only 103 women. Most of the crew also died during the sinking of the Titanic. There were 899 crew members and 685 of them died during the tragedy. Children also had a high fatality rate, although there weren’t as many on board. 53 Children died which was about half the number of children on board.

The sinking of the Titanic was an event that destroyed hundreds if not thousands of families. Illustrating the consequences that can arise from ill planning and preparation, the Titanic wreck has become the largest peacetime maritime disaster in history. The loss of 1,517 lives has cemented itself in history and is something that the world has tried vigilantly not to repeat.

When it comes to the loss of life experienced on the Titanic, many investigations and research has been done to see the causes and ways that the horrible event could have been prevented. There is no way to bring back those who were lost in the Titanic disaster, but perhaps we can learn from the mistakes of the Titanic in order to avoid repeating history.

Many Titanic survivors who lived through the horrendous event have also offered their stories and descriptions of the event. Unfortunately, as of March of 2009, there are no more living Titanic survivors who can share their experiences first-hand. However, many have stepped forward throughout the years and shared their unique experiences with a variety of media outlets.

With the Titanic 100th anniversary quickly approaching, there has never been a better time to remember those lost during the sinking of the Titanic and learn of ways to prevent the event in the future.

After the success of 3d sensation Avatar, James Cameron may be thinking of releasing his movie masterpiece Titanic in theaters once again. The Titanic movie would be a 3d version of the previously highest grossing movie of all time before avatar and just in time for the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic. A report in the Los Angeles Times states that the blockbuster director is currently in the process of converting the Titanic movie into 3d and will re-release the masterpiece in 2012 in order to commemorate the Titanic 100th anniversary.

The 1997 film which stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet won 11 Academy Awards and was previously the highest grossing movie of all time. Depicting a fake romance aboard the Titanic, the movie uses the perfect amount of history and Hollywood flare to create a movie that is compelling and offers a great look into what it meant to be part of the Titanic disaster. A re-release of this movie will likely be one of the largest movie events of the decade, and a reason to once again fall in love with the Titanic story.

Although many individuals are skeptical on the necessity to release every single movie in 3d, Cameron is on the forefront of the movement. With Avatar becoming the highest grossing movie of all time, the landscape of movies has been changed forever. Expect some of the classic films from your life being released in stunning 3d. One of the reasons that Titanic is so riveting as a 3d film is the feeling of being part of the event. A person aboard a doomed vessel, feeling exactly what the characters in the film are, the 3d Titanic experience is sure to be something that is kept in mind of a long period of time.

It’s not every day that one of the highest grossing movies is re-released in theaters with an entirely new landscape. Count on James Cameron to once again blow audiences away with a beautifully re-designed Titanic landscape in 3d. Witness the triumph and tragedy of the Titanic in an entirely different way and relive the events that took place on April 14, 1912. Just in time for the Titanic 100th anniversary, Titanic the movie will hit the theaters and captivate audiences around the world once again.

As with any disaster in history, many quotes and sayings have been documented over the years. Whether it is an unconfirmed statement from someone of the time period, or a quote from one of the individuals involved in the voyage, Titanic quotes and sayings capture the majesty of the Titanic as well as the sadness surrounding the night of April 14, 1912. Collected over the years from a wide variety of individuals, Titanic quotes are some of the most sought after historic quotes in the current age. Illustrating both triumph and tragedy and involving some of the most famous individuals of the time period, here are some of most well-known Titanic quotes and sayings.

Titanic, name and thing, will stand as a monument and warning to human presumption.

-The Bishop of Winchester, preaching in Southampton, 1912.

Ice, I suppose, sir.

Fifth Officer Lowe, asked by Senator Smith what an iceberg is composed of. (The question was not really silly. Boxhall had earlier testified that icebergs had been known to have rocks embedded in them).

Shut up! Shut up! I am busy. I am working Cape Race!

John Phillips, in reply to Cyril Evans’ final ice warning.

It was as though we went over about a thousand marbles.

Mrs J.S.White, describing the impact with the iceberg.

Wonderful thing, wireless, isn’t it?

Captain Arthur Rostron, to Second Officer James Bisset, having told him the latest news on the known positions of icebergs. This was at around 10-00 p.m., April 14th, 1912.

It seemed more like an old fishing boat had sunk.

Captain Stanley Lord, commenting on the surprising lack of debris at the scene of the sinking.

Some other Hand than mine was on that helm during the night.

Captain Arthur Rostron, reflecting on his safe passage among the icebergs to the lifeboats.

I cannot imagine any condition which would cause a ship to founder. I cannot conceive of any vital disaster happening to this vessel. Modern shipbuilding has gone beyond that.

Captain Edward Smith, referring to Adriatic

Send SOS; It’s the new call and it may be your last chance to send it!

Harold Bride to John Phillips.

It is not given to everyone to be a hero.

Nautical Magazine, on J.Bruce Ismay.

There was too much brag and not enough seaworthy construction.

Sir James Bisset, on Olympic and Titanic.

If this is discipline, what would have been disorder?

Senator Smith, on the chaotic loading of the lifeboats.

God himself could not sink this ship!

Unknown Titanic crewmember to embarking passenger, Mrs Sylvia Caldwell.

Ever since the Titanic tragedy, many forms of art have spoke of the Titanic disaster commemorating the majesty of the vessel and remembering those lost on the night of April 14, 1912. Capturing the emotion of the event and illustrating the somber nature of the topic, Titanic songs and poems reflect the accomplishment of the engineering beauty of the ship as well as sadness associated with the disaster. Here are some of the most well known Titanic poems and songs and the message that they are attempting to convey.

The Lamentable Titanic Disaster

By William Topaz McGonagall, Poet and Tragedian

Written about the Titanic disaster, the poem illustrates the sense of comfort that both captain and passengers felt during the voyage of the vessel. Beginning with “Oh, mighty Titanic! It grieves me to say
That over fifteen hundred lives were taken away,
When the ocean did drown your passengers so happy and gay”, the poem then takes a turn for the worst when McGongall writes “Which happened on the fifteenth day of April in the year 1912,
When brave Captain Smith cried, “Every man for himself”!

Illustrating both triumph and tragedy associated with the Titanic, the poet illustrates the entire journey of the vessel and mentions some of the famous individuals aboard the ship when it sank including the most famous John Jacob Astor. McGongall even write about the construction of the ship. A comprehensive view of the Titanic and it’s legacy, the poem in full can be found here: The Lamentable Titanic Disaster.

The Passing of the Titanic

Written by Christopher Thomas Nixon

What was seen as an initially feeble attempt at capturing the true beauty of the Titanic and properly illustrating its tragedy, the Passing of the Titanic was written sometime in 1912 soon after the event. Showing a very extended vocabulary and perfect rhyme scheme, the poem has every element of a piece of fine literature, but lacks a bit in the content. Here are some of the verses from the Passing of the Titanic.

Through deep-sea gates of famed Southampton’s bay,
A mammoth liner swings in churning slide
Her regal tread ridged opaline gulfs asway,.
And gauntlet flings to chance, wind, shoal and tide.
Ark wonderful! Palatial town marine,
Invention’s flower, rose-peak of skill-wrought plan;
The jewelled crown of Art the wizard, seen
Since Noah’s trade in Shinar’s land began.

Vast triple screws gyrating flail and bore
Swart blades as flukes of monstrous scouring whale;
Huge arm-rock cranks, and tree-bole shaftings roar
And thrum reverberate, loud dynamic gale.
Stout deep-thrust pistons lunge and flash disport
As mastadonic mighty tusks agleam;
Grim arc-bent turbine giant whirrs retort,
And gasps propulsing, force-gyved record dream.

The poem then goes on to illustrate the Titanic tragedy as well as the aftermath, but many individuals who have this poem posted only offer the first few verses.

My Heart Will go On

Written by Ceiline Dion

Embodying the essence of love and loss, “My Heart Will go On” was the song associated with the 1994 James Cameron blockbuster Titanic. Found on virtually every music collection of the time, the song was created to be the perfect piece of art associated with the love and loss of the actors in the story. Still considered to this very day as the “Titanic song” my heart will go on is part of the soundtrack to the Titanic film.

More titanic Poems and Songs

These are quite possibly the most popular Titanic poems and songs are generally viewed as a parody within the world of the Titanic. Some songs have been written to commemorate the event, but many were not recorded and have been lost over time. When it comes to Titanic poems and songs, there is simply not a whole lot of material that has been published, and some of the items that have are regarded as foolish attempts at art.

After the commercial success of the movie Titanic, directed by James Cameron, there have been many different individuals attempting to recreate the craze of the movie or to simply mock its success in a light-hearted way.

From the riveting release of Titanic 2, to the romance of now old Titanic survivors, these picture show an ability to even turn a large disaster into something that can be viewed in a less tragic and more humorous light. Here are some of the top funny Titanic pictures created by people on the web, or are actually legitimate releases set to appear closer to the Titanic 100th anniversary.

Titanic Karcher

Powerful enough to pump the ocean around the Titanic, this advertisement is the epitome of hyperbole and one of the funniest Titanic pictures available. There’s no guarantee that Karcher will actually help you locate and beach the wreckage of the Titanic, they’re simply suggesting that it could be done.

Titanic Survivors

What is probably an accurate depiction of what the Titanic survivors would look like nearly 100 years later, this picture immediately strips all of the glitz and glamor out of the original Titanic flick. Perhaps it’s time that people saw what the survivors actually look like instead of actors creating a false image of eternal youth. A rude awakening world; not everyone is as beautiful as Leo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett, meeting a survivor would more likely leave you with these reults.

Titanic Sequels

Sequels are often funny in the movie world on their own. Money grabbing titles that generally don’t offer as much creativity or entertainment as the original, sequels often lack contingency and simply don’t have as much time or production put into them. Perhaps one of the most hilarious conceptions of a sequel are those of the Titanic. Those who know a single thing about the Titanic are aware of how the first story ends; and that leaves little room for a second story. Or so we thought.

Titanic 2

According to an article in Perez Hilton, there is an actual studio film in the works based on the story of the Titanic. The film will apparently take place in modern day and involve a group of people on the Titanic racing against the clock in order to avoid the fate of the original vessel. Aside from the almost certain legal backlash from jillionaire director James Cameron, did the producers of this movie stop to think how ludicrous this sounds? The first Titanic sinks; end of story. Why make a second one and drive into the same area where over 1,000 lives were lost? I guess it’s up to them to show us.

Jack is Back

A less serious and quite possibly a better idea for a movie than the Titanic sequel that is in the works, this movie suggests the aftermath of the sinking of the Titanic and the death of the main character of the movie Jack. What if the ocean was not his final resting place and he returned as a flesh eating ghoul hell-bent on, revenge against the people responsible for his demise. The largest grossing film of its time and quite possibly the “Gone With the Wind” of the 90′s, Titanic shows the romance side of the tragedy, while Titanic 2: Jack Is Back can show the more gruesome and demonic side of the tragedy. I can think of a few people who would go see it.

Like him or not, James Cameron sure knows how to make a movie. His latest film Avatar has recently became the highest grossing film of all time, raking in a ridiculous $1.859 billion. This number eclipses the previous movie Titanic, also directed by Cameron that brought in $1.843 billion. It cannot be denied that Cameron knows how to capture the attention of a wide demographic of moviegoer and create movies that flat out make money. Here are some of the reasons the latest Cameron films have been box office hits.

In the Titanic movie, Cameron made the wise decision of picking heartthrobs Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslett to portray the main characters, a love story that is almost too good looking to occur in real life. Avatar implemented the same type of approach with visuals so stunning that they would be impressive to nearly everyone. Using the latest technology available and really running with it, the Avatar movie took advantage of the breakthroughs in 3d and Imax and allowed viewers to be transported inside the fantasy world.

Always visually stunning, always engaging, the Titanic movie and Avatar have it all. Plenty of emotion, special effects that blow audiences away, and characters that are well developed. Audiences end up loving or hating characters designed by Cameron and connect with them, even if they are little blue people. Say what you want about the budget of his movies, but the result is always something stunning. After creating gems such as Terminator and Aliens, it’s not surprising that Avatar is a great science fiction/fantasy movie, a genre that Cameron is used to working within.

The happy ending. Something that Cameron illustrates perfectly, and sometimes unexpectedly. Both films take the idea of a happy ending and really drive the point home. The incredible ending of Titanic showed a ‘love conquers all’ type of ending which people go crazy for. Cameron’s movies have been successful simply because he knows the formula and knows what’s popular at the time. In an event that few thought possible, Avatar has finally sunk Titanic and has become the highest grossing box office film of all time.

At 2 months old, Millvina Dean was the youngest person on the Titanic when it met its ghastly demise on April 14, 1912. almost 100 years ago. The last of the remaining Titanic survivors, her ashes were recently scattered at the location of where the vessel embarked on its maiden voyage in Southhampton, England. Dean’s parents were originally on a voyage to emigrate to Wichita, Kansas when the vessel struck an iceberg in the middle of the Atlantic. The 2 month old Millvina and her parents were transferred to the Titanic due to a coal strike which delayed their original ship. Miss Dean, her mother, and her brother were placed on lifeboat 10 after the collision and they were among one of the first passengers to escape. Her father did not survive.

Miss Dean died at her nursing home in Ashurst, in the New Forest, on May 31 — 98 years to the day that Titanic was launched in Belfast. About 150 people, including representatives from Titanic societies around the world, attended the service. Her death came a month after Titanic movie stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet offered to pay her nursing home fees. Almost 100 years after the Titanic disaster, the living legacy of those who survived the wreck has ended. Although pieces of history illustrating the tragedy remain, the last living legend of one of the largest maritime disasters of all time has been laid to rest in the Atlantic.

October 27, 2009

Official owners of the Titanic shipwreck by the name of RMS Titanic Inc. are planning a possible expedition back to the legendary shipwreck in 2010. The company is currently undergoing court hearings to ensure that the salvage would preserve the legendary Titanic shipwreck for public as well as being a lucrative salvage for RMS Titanic Inc. This expedition would mark the first one since 2004 (one of the previous include an expedition for the 1997 Titanic movie).

U.S. District Judge Rebecca Beach Smith, a maritime jurist who considers the wreck an “international treasure,” is presiding over the hearings. They are not only intended to determine a salvage award, but to establish legal guarantees that thousands of Titanic artifacts remain intact as a collection and forever accessible to the public. Some pieces have ended up in London auction houses. Over 5,900 pieces of china ship fittings and personal belongings are valued at over $110 million and are displayed by Premier Exhibitions Inc.; a subsidiary of RMS Titanic Inc.

Judge Smith has called the management of Premier Exhibitions into question, but the company claims that the hiring of their new CEO Chritopher Davino has turned the company around. The company underwent a board change in 2009 and received a $12 million cash infusion from investors. Davino took charge five months ago. Jack H. Jacobs, one of the new directors, said Premier had been “an extremely poorly run company,” but has turned around. He said the mismanagement did not extend to the conservancy of the Titanic artifacts. Asked by RMS Titanic attorney Robert W. McFarland if Premier was committed to properly maintaining the artifacts, Jacobs replied: “Yes, absolutely committed. Unequivocally committed.”

Deep-dive explorer Paul-Henry Nargeolet, who has led five expeditions to the Titanic wreck spoke to the dangers of deep sea exploration including icebergs that can destroy dive ships, claustrophobic voyages 12,000-feet down to the wreck through 33-degree Atlantic waters. After being discovered in 1985 by Dr. Robert Ballard, the Titanic wreck has been undergoing court claims as to the ownership of the wreckage. Courts have declared that RMS Titanic Inc. has exclusive rights to salvage the Titanic. At the hearings this week in Norfolk, lawyers for RMS Titanic will seek title to the artifacts and a monetary award for its salvage costs.

Judge Smith has called upon the government to assemble the Titanic artifacts as a collection available to the public. Smith is mindful of the historic importance of the Titanic and the 1,522 lost in the tragedy based on her previous rulings and statements from the bench. If the court agrees to RMS Titanic’s request, the company could sell the entire collection to a museum with court approval. The company has said it has no plans to do so.

A citizen by the name of Douglas Faulkner Woolley has also challenged the case and is planning his own expedition. So the question still remains: who owns the Titanic shipwreck, one of the largest collection of historic Titanic artifacts buried 2.4 miles below the surface of the Atlantic.
